The village center of the "Warfendorf" Upleward is characterized by small, quaint single-family houses and large farms grouped around a gothic church. The coastal areas near the village are protected by dikes. Due to the tides, the village has no sand beach, but tourists can look forward to playing beach volleyball, enjoing the sunny day in the beach basket and building sandcastles at North Germany's unique beach behind the dike. Pilsum Our short bike tour takes you through the municipality of Krummhörn and some of its 18 typical villages. Hamswehrum, Groothusen, Manslagt and the destination Pilsum were built as villages on a hill for protection against storm floods. The village of Pilsum, with its towering church and the mighty crossing tower, has been considered one of the most beautiful villages in the municipality of Krummhörn since the village renewal in the mid-1980s. Winding alleys, lovingly renovated rural workers' houses and gulf farms (typical East Frisian farmhouses) and the magnificent church, which is classified as a national monument, give the village its unmistakable charm. Through the East Frisian marshland the tour leads through the villages Hamswehrum, Groothusen, Manslagt and Pilsum. Once you arrive in Greetsiel, you will breathe history and seafaring romance in a unique environment of charming historic gabled houses, idyllic alleys and the dreamy harbour with its typical crab boats. The way back takes you along the outer dike for a while. Why not make a stop at the Pilsum Lighthouse! Made famous by comedian Otto Walkes. Emden offers a comprehensive cultural program and a wide range of events for explorers. In the East Frisian country museum, culture enthusiasts can get their money's worth and the Emden harbor can be explored with a boat trip. From here you can also take a ferry to Holland. As the funniest Ostfriesland hint we recommend a museum where you can laugh: "Dat Otto Huus" shows the career of the comedian Otto Waalkes from Emden.
